Finding value as a generalist geek

I attended a small conference yesterday hosted by one of our software vendors, and I wanted to write up some thoughts about it really quick. It's probably the first real "networking" I've ever done. I think that in this day and age, any business, profit or non-, needs a staff geek. The ones who think they don't are missing people that they could be connecting with, and are missing opportunities and support. Even if their main constituents are in a less wired demographic, there are still people in that demographic that are online. Plus so many other things, like record-keeping and banking, can be done more efficiently with the help of a generalized geek.

Yeah, the sad thing is, those people who think their donors/clients/supporters aren't online? Are probably wrong. I'm definitely getting fired up about this. There were some good, important organizations in that room on Wednesday, and they're missing out on an invaluable tool by not using the internet.

The hard thing, of course, is going to be a combination of getting them to see that and getting them to do something about it. You can do it with one on one work, but there has to be a more efficient way to go about it. Do you have any ideas about how you're going to do it?

This is a way to really make a difference, I think!

You know, I've gotten to the point where I always look up a place's website to learn more about them before deciding to use their services. And honestly, if there isn't one or if the site really stinks, then I usually don't go with them. I'm sure I'm not the only out there who does that!

You should see the smile I have on my face from reading this. That is so freaking awesome for you! And I think you're so right about the niche you've discovered. Not many people are lucky enough to find a job that their natural pursuits make them uniquely qualified for :)
