NAFTA ANNIVERSARY

So, there I was, merrily rolling along the road, thinking happy thoughts about the upcoming workday (yes, I really DO like my work!) and the radio announcer comes on to tell us that it's the 15th anniversary since Canada signed on to NAFTA. Low wages aren't a big problem... high profits are good for shareholders and the economy... and low prices are good for *everyone*.

I used to think so...until I take a look at places like China, India and Mexico. The rest of the world treats them as developing nations...my ass!! They have powerful economic engines already - why the hell should we fuel them at the cost of our own? China actually has a viable space program - yet they want handouts from the rest of the world? WTF? I like cheap goods as much as the next guy and I will defend a free market economy...but I am beginning to wonder if some of the labour practices of the countries from whom we import most of our cheap goods isn't worth the savings. Am I growing a conscience...maybe or maybe I just don't like to see the waste of human potential for no good reason.
