It would appear that Senator McCain is down to his last quarter million dollars. What can you say about a formerly progressive Republican who used to be somewhat of a maverick, unafraid to challenge other party members who started sticking his head so far up the President's ass, if he had a mustache, it would be tickling the back of Dubya's throat

I've read that McCain and his advisors decided that the reason he lost the primary to Bush in 2000 was because Bush was viewed as the Establishment candidate while McCain was viewed as the Outsider. This time McCain consciously decided to portray himself as the heir to Bush by adopting Bush's positions and courting Bush's base.

He wasn't counting on (A) Bush becoming so unpopular, (B) McCain's former supporters calling him on the bullshit, and (C) Bush's base also calling him on the bullshit.

It was way too late for McCain to transform himself into the Establishment candidate. And by trying to do so he destroyed the positive image he was once admired for.
