The Waterfront

Robert, this is a different city from when you and I first came here to live. I remember in 1987 when I was thinking about moving to B-burg. A goddessy-type friend and I went out there to look at a few places. The apartments were scary -- clearly illegal jerry-built caves hewn out of lofts (for around $400 a month), raw spaces above auto-repair shops, tenement flats with the bathtub in the kitchen. We had quaint ideas about moving all our friends out there and starting a quilting circle, but back then it seemed like another country, full of wizened old men and dangerous young ones. You couldn't get the New York Times or soymilk. In the end I moved elsewhere in the city, and here I am, and there you are. The last time I was in B-burg was many years ago -- must have been at one of your birthdays. From where I sit now, everything else in New York City is another country. Peace,
Pentimento
