Leaving It on the Field

On Friday I joined a pick-up soccer game late. I was sluggish (i.e. hungover) and played miserably. On the last play of the game, I tried to dribble around this Yemeni kid - maybe eighteen and very quick - who I play with a lot and he gashed me with his cleats, stole the ball, and scored the winning goal. What I like about these games is the fact that they're (usually) mellow. But men will be men and with the testosterone flying...But no, I really don't want to get into any more fights. There's one British schmuck out there I've come close to hitting a bunch of times, but thank god it's never come to that. I just want to ball.

I admire your restraint. I can certainly appreciate wanting to avoid fights. I stay away from 'em, too. People sometimes equate boxing with "fighting," as in a street fight or a fight with a sports opponent on the field, but there's a world of difference to me. While I'm still happy to put the gloves on, I've learned that I want to avoid the latter kind of combat. Yeah, there were times, in my younger and wilder days, that I would be ready to throw down with someone in the course of another game, but these days I am playing merely to have fun. OK, so it was always about fun, but now I hurt a lot more the next day if things escalate into a physical conflict that isn't part of the game ( ... )
