From an article by Squarepusher:"As is commonly percieved, the relationship between a human operator and a machine is such that the machine is a tool, an instrument of the composers desires. Implicit in this, and generally unquestioned until recently, is the sovereignty of the composer. What is now becoming clear is that the composer is as much a ( Read more... )

I agree with you on all points, but considering the innovativeness of Squarepusher's musical output, I can set all that aside. You have to recognize that he's (deservedly) a major figure in a genre called "Intelligent Dance Music." Yeah, he's gonna be that type of writer.

You ever read Stravinsky's notes on composition? Most of the same sloppy arrogance is in that shit. If he hadn't been dictating the whole thing to some humble nobody, it would've been lined with so many scare-quotes. But behind all the obnoxiousness, Igor outlines a portion of his compositional technique, and he who listens is left with his mouth hanging open.

Basically, if you're wanting to get inside the head of a genius that knows he's a genius, you're going to have to sort through some serious bullshit.

Also note that you just used the word "bombast" followed by a reference to an academic figure (I presume) that *nobody* has ever heard of.

Hmmm, you know it's a well known fact among electronic music producers that there is somthing about the BPM's of IDM and the process of production its self, that works badly over the psychi. The same way the the BPM's of drum and bass are the same timing that babies are vibrated in their mothers stomach, and the low vibrations of Om's encourage growth and regeneration, --somthing about the BPM's of IDM eventually cause its producers to become very introvert and have a difficult time connecting with other people. After a while it seems to kind of, socially impair them.
