I think it's easiest to start with the contrast between personal property and private property. People have an exclusive right to their personal property, because they use it regularly. As an example, my partner and I have an exclusive right to our silverware, because we are the only ones who use it regularly. On the other hand, private property entails that someone owns something, even if they never use it. The tables on which I used to assemble plant lights were my bosses' private property, because they owned them, despite the fact that I was the one who did the real work of assembling the plant lights. However, I was the worker, I was the one who was converting my labor into something of value. That is why private property -- and not personal property -- is theft.
