It's interesting to speculate what happened to the Master to land him up as the human Professor.
The Master was last seen in the 1996 TV movie, played by Eric Roberts, and at the end of it he was pulled into the heart of the TARDIS, seemingly never to be seen again. It's just possible that, at the outbreak of the Time War, the Time Lords needed to call upon every resource they had, including the morally dubious ones. So maybe the Doctor was instructed to release the Master from the TARDIS and he was pressed into action against the Daleks.
Also, by the time of the TV movie the Master had long exhausted his regeneration cycle, and it's likely only the Time Lords were in a position to give him a new one - as the price of his support?
I suppose we'll find out more about how he ended up as human next week. The idea of an episode with John Simm rather than David Tennant centre stage is very intriguing - with battle commencing between the two in episode 13! :D
Apart from the Doctor and his granddaughter Susan, the first character from the Doctor's race seen in the series, back in 1965, was The Monk (played by "Carry On" actor Peter Butterworth!).
Then, in 1969, we had The War Chief (played by Edward Brayshaw, who later became Mr Meaker in "Rentaghost"!)
Sadly, since then most Time Lords introduced to the series have had proper names, and renegade Time Lord villains have included Morbius, President Borusa and Chancellor Goth.
The Doctor even had a Time Lady companion for a while, Romanadvoratrelundar (Romana for short). Let's hope she masqueraded as a human and survived, as well!

I'm terrible about reading spoilers as well. I can't resist them...
