Close your eyes and think about what you've been missing in your life lately. It could be a person, pet, place, thing, occasion, feeling. Anything at all that you miss dearly.
That was just what Dick did. He ventured into the small living room of his apartment and took a seat on the couch perched against a plain, off-white wall. He took in the silence-- as much silence as a city could have, and he shut his eyes and he thought.
He lay back against the couch, hands laced together behind his head, allowing everything that he missed to run through every corner of his mind; to reminisce anything he may have forgotten... whether it was lately or long ago. It came as a surprise, and yet no surprise at all, how much he really missed. How much he'd been letting pass him by.
One came to him straight away; the two things he'd been thinking an awful lot about lately: Mom and Dad. He'd been asked many questions and heard statements that would remind him of his parents and how badly he missed their company. He swore losing them wouldn't ruin him and he would never let it, but he wouldn't let himself forget them either. Dick would never stop missing his parents, never stop thinking about the times he'd been blessed to have with them. He'd moved on, no doubt... but there were still days, similar to this one when he would just sit and think about them. It was only normal-- it was impossible to completely forget about a lost loved one.
Of course, Dick didn't just miss his parents. He thought about when Bruce took him in, under his wing. He'd come to find that he missed the times when he'd been Robin the Boy Wonder and all those times he'd managed to sneak Alfred's cookies from the jar... even though he'd more often than not gotten caught. He missed spending time with Barbara, like they used to when they were younger. Unfortuantely, he never got to see her too much anymore, despite that they still talked. His other friends, like the Titans-- the team he led as Robin, consisting of Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Speedy, Aqualad and himself... he missed them too. Then there was Kori... he never talked to her anymore. Not ever since Raven had wrecked their wedding. She'd never been the same since then, but he still thought about her; still cherished their friendship.
After that, he'd really gone solo. Part of him missed being on a team, but the other part liked being on his own. As time progressed, things had tended to get more hectic with him. He met Catalina-- the Tarantula. She was one of the reasons for that and he had really liked her... but he never sees her anymore either. She'd seemed to have vanished from his life after the gang wars and somewhere inside, he was disappointed.
Recently, he'd been missing the things that had simply been passing him by. It felt like he never spent any time with the people that mattered anymore. Sure, he visited with Bruce, Tim, Wally, Roy, Babs... but did he ever actually stop to say: "Hey, let's go out and do something besides crime-fighting."? Not really.
If anything, he could still do something about that. A sudden smile spread across Dick's lips, then... and that's when he decided. No more missing what's right in front of him-- he wasn't going to let his friends fly past him...not if he could help it.
