That sucks, bb. But you do what you have to do to preserve your work. I have no doubts you will have this book into our grubby little hands sooner rather than later.
That's good! Of course, I'm curious about what they wanted to do, but please don't feel obligated to divulge - contracts are private, after all! It sucks that they obviously felt that you would go along with whatever they wanted to do and didn't have any problem in springing this last-minute change on you.
If you go to my blogspot blog and follow the link to Bradley Beaulieu's post about similar, most of the issues are there. I cannot re-iterate that NSB puts out great stuff and are trying so hard. It was just not going to work out between us in the end.
That must be hugely disappointing for you, but yeah, that doesn't sound like professional behavior on their part. Good on you for sticking to your guns. Good luck on finding a publisher elsewhere.
I really love the books that NSB puts out and would have been really proud to have been one of their authors. But it was going sideways, and was probably in their best interest and in mine. But it's still sad.
Really? How can they justify changing a contract so close to publication? That seems very wrong to me. I hope you have another publisher lined up - or at least have a good prospect of one.
My agent's on the hunt. I have to say, my agent, Sandy, has been in my court the whole time. I shudder to think how confusing and harrowing it would have been without her.
I went to a session about becoming a published author a couple of years ago and came out of there convinced a good agent would be worth every penny of their commission - it's great to know you found one! All the best with finding another route - I read the other guy's blog, interesting times in the Chinese sense I think.
I've just checked my pre-order on Amazon UK and there is no notification there yet that this isn't going to happen. I can't work out if they've already debited my card but I think not, I don't think they actually put the payment through until they are ready to dispatch the order. The price has actually increased though!
Huh, dang, that totally sucks for you! (I pre-ordered, but I don't think Amazon charged me yet. I'll have to check...)
I'm really curious about what they wanted to change, or is that under a NDA? You going to look for a new publisher or self-publish? TOR might dig it, but that's a daunting prospect! Maybe Subterranean Press? I dunno, just throwing some thoughts out there.
*shakes wee fist at Nightshade* I was really looking forward to this and I KNOW you were too!
Double-check, just to make sure. If you go to my blog and follow the link through to Bradley Beaulieu's post, how he describes his relationship with NSB is almost identical to mine.
My agent has been so supportive, and is already submitting to other publishers. I don't doubt that I'll have more news soon. Thanks for your words of support, though. It makes my day.
Changing a contract so close to publication sounds a little manipulative. That must have been a very hard decision for you but it looks like it was the right one and I hope you'll find a new publisher quickly. Good luck!
