When I was growing up, I looked forward to going to college. University, I mean. Only, in all the American sitcoms and TV series, young people were going to "college". There, they wouldn't have to wear school uniforms, they get to carry books in their arms instead of lugging backpacks around, and they'd go to the prom. Or was that high school?

in some places (or courses) it's about learning how to learn and what useless things people have found useful to know.
in other places it's about picking up a body of knowledge that those that practice in a particular field erect as a barrier to entry into their field.
and in other places it isn't even worth the paper your diploma is printed on.
what with grade inflation and changes happening in the world faster than in schools my sense is employers in the future will have to depend increasingly on other measures to asses their potential employees. and certainly as you progress in your life and career your body of work experience counts more and more.
