I’ve been thinking about how often Niall pops up in these posts.  True that I see him a lot:  assistant ringing master at my home tower, loyalest of the loyal Sunday morning service ringers-I should know, since I’m another, um, well, probably the other-handbell mentor/fiend and general all-purposes bell junkie, which is to say he turns up at my ( Read more... )

Have you ever read R.A. Lafferty's Space Chantey?
Puts a whole different spin on the Odyssey.
Add it to your book list. Lafferty is a Master.

Probably. I've read most of Lafferty. But I don't remember it. My bad. Which is not to say it's not still an INFLUENCE seething away in there somewhere.

Short story? What's it in?

Novella?
It was half of an Ace Double that I have.
No idea if/how it's been reprinted.
RoadStorm and his crew of spacemen trying to get home. The Odyssey in space, and in Lafferty's wonderful style.

Yes, this is one of the two Chaucer's Tales I had to do for my Eng Lit A levels, more decades ago than I wish to remember. I loathed every atom of it from start to finish. There's a lot wrong with things today but I am SO grateful I didn't live as a woman in those times!

Sleep well.

Somehow the 'daggers' morphed into asterisks by the footnotes. I was able to follow by reading in order of appearance, but it threw me a bit. I mention this because, as I recall, you said you wanted to hear when the didn't go right in your new footnote program.
Interesting reading as usual.
My congratulations also on the six month celebration of this blog.
I do hope the ME has subsided again.

Oh I LOVE John William Waterhouse - and I have never seen that picture!!! Thank you!! ... I agree, I always found Penelope a strong female character. Once I was old enough to read the actual Odyssey and not the "kiddie" one, I got to like her quite a lot, and felt horrible for her, waiting for her husband for so long with a bunch of loud, horrible, over-sexed men invading her house. Have you read "The Penelopiad"? I don't have a clue who wrote it (was that the Atwood you were talking about?), but it was recommended to me once.

I love that painting! Waterhouse is my very favorite painter; I'm a huge fan of all the Pre Raphaelites. I briefly considered if I could name one of my cats after Waterhouse, but that's such a mouthful and John and William didn't inspire me as cat names. I settled on Dante, for Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who is my second favorite PR painter, and a much better cat name. I actually love JWW so much I coaxed my photographer friend into helping me recreate his Naiad painting as a photograph. I spent MONTHS painting a mural to resemble the background of his painting and bought fake leaves to make a hat for myself too. The only problem in the end was that I used my at-the-time husband to be the guy sleeping in the painting/photo and now that we're divorcing and he's being excessively mean to me, I have mixed feelings viewing the photos. But they're still beautiful PHOTOS... I just need to photoshop his face out.

Is this anything you'd be willing to post? It sounds terrific.

Sure! I loaded them all into an entry on my lj, it's here: http://artosthebear.livejournal.com/ You have to click on the blue words to actually view the photos; I didn't want to get in trouble with lj for having nudes on my front page, even if they art nudes. Anyone who would like to can view them, and I would be happy to hear any comments on them as well! If you like these Robin (sorry, I know that sounds awfully familiar, but Ms. McKinley sounds even more awful in an lj post) some time I'll show you the Artemis shoot the photographer and I did utilizing my own hellhound.

I love the description of how you made the background!!! Especially the trees! And this may or may not be the right thing to say, but your bloke, in my opinion, is the weakest thing about the photos. You might want to photoshop a whole different bloke . . .
