Job Fair

So... went to a job fair today. For the most part, it was kind... eh. Most of the companies there were of the financial or medical fields, both of which I'm totally not good at. BUT, I did talk to some temp agencies who have clerical/data entry/office work, which is more up my alley then the others. So... I submitted my resume to one, and got ( Read more... )

That was one thing that I considered when the market was really bad around here - if Waldens closed and I lost my job, I was going to try temp agencies, because sometimes temp places actually pan out for full time jobs. 8Db So I think that was a good move on your part.

I had actually thought about temp when I first got out of college, but managed to get hired at the newspaper not long after I graduated, so I didn't have to, but she did mention that they had temp-to-hire, so I can hope there. And even if they don't, temp would mean extra money in my account and something to do until I could find something full time.

Oh definitely! I mean, as much as I bitch about work, if I was out of work again like I was once before, I'd be bored out of my miiiiiind D8 - extra money is always good. 8C Especially if you want to get yourself a little treat once and awhile. ;3

Speaking from recent experience, most colleges prefer you enroll in fall. So you probably have missed the Admissions deadline for Summer Semester, but you might be okay to go ahead and start applying for Fall if you're really interested.

And FYI, I've had several friends get permanent jobs through temping; the company would bring them on to temp, decide they like them, then hire them.

Best of luck!

I know that the transfer enrollment date for the school Ri is going to is May 1st. Which, if I push, I might be able to hit.

I'm crossing my fingers. XD

Thank you!

Good luck with the temp agencies! Most everyone our age is in the same boat right now, so it's good that you found some places that were actually taking people on at a time like this (no such luck here in Orlando).

Get out of Sussex. It's evil.

Well, in order to get out of Sussex, I need money. :)

And we'd have to find some place affordable and would allow us to have four cats at the least and six at the most.

I'm still technically temping. It's a kind of weird position, though, as the company seems to thrive on the oxymoron of perma-temps, ie temps that they'll keep on for ages. Another temp in my department has been there for over a year now and I'm at, oh, half a year there myself?

And it's not bad. It's not great, as you don't get vacation time or benefits really (though I've got pretty cheap health care through the agency). But it IS work and it does pay the bills, which is definitely something. And it's something to get you by while you continue to poke around for better work, like I'm doing.

So it's definitely worth a shot. ♥

The only thing that concerns me is getting time off when needed, but then again, that concerns me at any job I've been at, simply because I don't really do vacations so much as go to conventions. I know at the paper, they sometimes got bitchy if I broke up vacation weeks, but I told them I did that so I could spend the beginning part of the week doing the ads that no one wanted to and they could just fix them up when they came back from proof.

Some jobs are pissy about that, but most places you just need to ask. Which I'm horrible at, sooooo. Yeah. XD

No paid time off, of course. But that's a strange concept anyway, isn't it? 8|

A lot of companies don't hire outright. My job hired me as full time right away but most of the other people who work here were temps first.

Getting days off is not a problem, you just won't get paid for them. Some temp agencies have paid time off and benefits if you're with them long enough, but it really depends on the agency. You might want to contact the other one just in case b/c they might offer benefits or time off and this one doesn't. You never know.
