Suffer the people of color

Alright, I've been waiting long enough for Racialicious to post their True Blood roundtable (note: it'll be up next week).  The season 4 finale was devastating and put a senseless damper on what was up to that point by far the show's best season.  Racialicious is one of two cultural-commentary-related blogs I know of that have not unfairly written ( Read more... )

1. bad girls who kiss/f*ck more than one man
2. the tough ambiguously lesbian chick
3. the evil CEO who is really a wimp
4. anyone with a physical or mental disability (TX Chainsaw Massacre wheelchair)

In short, only the white, blond, virginal/heroic females/males survive...
I guess filmmakers think these are the people their viewers are most likely to identify with...thank Jesus for people like Geo Romero...

btw, Jesus the Filmmaker (v. the Carpenter) would not kill off the black/latino/gay/disabled...but he might kill some money changin Jewish guys off...

Sookie---is she anything like Snookie? And, do you think the latter will ever get a guest spot on TB? That character's name sounds just a bit too Jersey Shore to me!

BTW, this is your mom...

It's been joked about on the show before. But, a Snooki appearance on TB would be the nail in the coffin (so to speak) for me. I'm on the edge of not watching anymore as it is.

You're right about that list of cliches up there, but 1 and 3 are definitely cautionary morality tales ("don't be a bad girl/slutty!" "don't be a greedy evil CEO!"). As bad as those may be on their own, "don't be black!" doesn't quite fit. Actually, the weird thing about girls kicking ass/having a healthy sex life is that it seems to be actually getting worse lately. Unlike racism, which has held steady, strong female characters are fewer and farther between than they were in the 80s and 90s. They're being more and more traditionally feminized and sexualized (in the male fantasy way, not the good way). What's up with that?
