Are you guys sure you want to buy brand-spankin'-new name brand bags, considering where you're going? The camera's going to be a dead giveaway when you take it out, I admit, but in the meantime, I'm thinking you might be better off with something that looks a little trashed. At least consider sewing some cheap fabric around the outside of the bags, maybe...?
Bring rubber bands. I packed them primarily to mark which rechargeable batteries were used and which were charged, but ended up finding them sooooo useful for other things on the trip, not the least of which was a makeshift rain protector for the camera and big lens on the day we were in the crater.
The guide you get for game viewing is super-critical to your experience, I think. We had a guide with 25 years experience in the area, and he found us things in a couple days that people have spent years trying to see without any luck.
In retrospect we could have skipped the entire Zanzibar leg of the trip. On one hand we wanted to see a more developed part of Africa, but it was hard to do, being white and obviously tourist meant that our choice was to either stay in the expensive catered-to resorts where we were overnighting or go out into the cities and get panhandled/sold-to every 30 seconds.
I was trying to decide if adding a trip to the coast would be worth it. I have two weeks in Arusha before I fly back and I think I'll have plenty to do in and around that area without heading out that way. Unless I go to Dar/Zanzibar with locals I know, it probably won't be worth it. Thanks for the info.
