when i was little, other kids would make fun of me for calling my parents stacy and dave instead of mom and dad.
it made sense to me. i never heard them called anything else, since they called each other by their first names.
i never understood why it was such a big deal, but i started calling my parents mom and dad after that.

See, I did not learn my mom's name till late in Elementary school, since everyone calls her by a nickname.

Also, everyone calls in my family my grandmother La Nona (unless they are around her age), even though she is not italian.
