When I lived in Quebec (a mainly-French speaking part of Canada... I assume you know this, but you'd be surprised how many people don't!), speaking my terrible French went a long way to form good relationships. My boss and colleagues were amazing and patient, and one guy who originally seemed to hate me for being an English-speaker slowly warmed up to me because I was trying so hard. And it really, really helped me learn the language, more than years and years of "Core French" in school did!
