I'm so bad at keeping up with this! Désolée toujours!

  • My old laptop finally croaked and every time I use my new one, I'm blown away! It's so quiet, and I can actually have it in my lap without worrying about the battery falling out or my legs getting burnt! It came with Vista though, which really isn't that bad because it just means I'll ( Read more... )

Digital camera. I feel like it would be easier to show off Japan to you guys that way.

I am in desperate need of a new laptop -- mine is also from the era of the "Oh my god, my legs are going to catch on fire from the heat!" type of computer. It's still functioning well, though, and I'm broke... so I'm waiting until it completely dies. :-)

I fiddled around with Ubuntu for a bit, ended up dual-booting it with Windows, but I eventually got rid of it because it was taking up too much memory. I think if I had to get a PC with Vista, though, I would try it out again.

Yo, what kind of laptop did you get? That's on the list of my 'things I want to get myself when I get back to the US'. I want to start browsing now.

As far as SLRs are concerned, I've become a nikon head. Were you thinking about the Cannon Rebel XTI--the most 'base' one? It's a good camera, but I've become a Nikon head. I'd super recommend the Nikon D40 (what I have)--it's a real bad boy. It's a great first SLR. If you want to be really bold, the D60 is a hyper sick camera. I do prefer the Nikon D40 to the base Rebel--better feel, more solid, better features, and a MUCH longer battery life. That's me though. I'll let you play around with Garibaldi when you get back if you want...

Yeah! Done with DU! You'll be leaving a bit after I'm returning. It'll add a nice cyclic-ality to thigs, perhaps...

My mom has a D70, it's older, but still sweet. I also have access to her consumer reports account, if you (Jordo) want their research.

Sorry for a tremendously late reply. I got a Sony Vaio VGN-CS215J, and adore it. I'm astonished at how much computer you can get for under $1k, so have fun with everything when you play with that, except Vista.

I'll give Nikons more of a chance! Nice camera name. Your photos do your recommendation justice, ha ha.

hey there! i've added you because we seem to share some commonality in diverse interests (house! shiina ringo! À bout de souffle!).

regarding SLRs:
the two latest entry-level models you can consider are the canon rebel T1i vs the nikon d5000. these two have the relatively new (to SLRs) ability to shoot video, which can be quite convenient. the nikon has a swivel lcd which can be useful.

you can't go wrong with any major brand, really. but if you do intend to go into photography, choosing a brand is an investment into its entire system (lenses and equipment, etc.).

Poking around your profile, we share even more interests, ha ha! So thanks for the friending, I've returned it!

Your advice definitely builds a better foundation for my decision, thanks! It's reassuring to have more an idea of WHAT to search for.

I didn't want to keep up a conversation on another LJ users post, so I'm writing back here, haha. I know what you mean, Denver has a lack of bloggers, idk why, so I'm always surprised to find another CO local.
You really should get down to Texas one day. Either you love it or you don't. And i love it.

I hope it's okay that I added you back.

I should, it's so close that I have no excuse, ha ha.
