I ate lunch with Jake today in the dorms. We were hanging out in his office afterwards, and he decided he was going to teach me calculus.
Jake: "This is a one time offer! Two minutes, and I can teach you calculus."
Me: "Nope, I'm good, thanks."
Jake: "Okay, so .... give me a function."
Me: "Really, it's okay."
* Jake stares*
Me: "Okay, uhh ... F=2x"
Jake: "Perfect - stop right there."
*Jake draws the graph of F=2x and explains how to find the slope and integral*
Jake: "... and that's, basically, calculus."
Me: "So why would you want to know the area under the curve?"
*Jake gets up and starts pacing (like he always does when he's talking about something exciting)*
Jake: "Okay, okay ... say you want to make a coffee mug, and you wanna know .... no, no, that's a bad example. Ok, say you want to build a grain silo. You have a lot of grain, and you need somewhere to put it. But it costs a lot to build, so you want to use the smallest amount of material, and get the biggest area possible. So, with that in mind, it makes the most sense to build a sphere. But you can't really build a sphere and set it on the ground and get grain out of it. So you want to build a silo, just, a cylinder with a top on it, right? So, how much grain can you store in a cylinder?"
Me: "Forget that, you should just rent space in a grain elevator. Then you don't even have to worry about building a silo!"
*Jake laughs and smiles*
Jake: "See ... this is why I'm going to be the breadwinner, and you're going to be the housewife."
And then he kissed me. I love that boy. =)
