LOL.
Australians like me complain when the price of petrol gets to $1.00
We are used to about 0.88 cents...and thats AUSTRALIAN cents.
God we're a cheeky country.

But also consider that the American dollar is worth more than the Australian dollar

Granted, it's not much more, the conversion is roughly 1.316 to 1

Australia's demand isn't as high as America's either, just by the simple fact that the US has a higher overall population density (I think, I should probably double-check that).

And how much of your oil do you need to import? I'm pretty sure you enough high-capacity oil fields on your own soil to accomodate most everyone......unless I'm just entirely mistaken

Australia has 150 trillion cubic feet of largely stranded gas reserves.
Cough.
As it turns out, we don't use the same *Gas* that you guys do, in fact, hardly anyone in this country does. We export it to America, I think.
So in other words we're stuck using expensive oil based petrol, when we could be using the gas, which most of the country only uses for heating and power.

On the other hand, someone could invent safe Nuclear powered cars, then Aus would probably become the producer/supplier in the world. Its just the idea of 100,00 small nuclear explosions occuring every year because of road accidents that is making people edgy.

...wtf mates?

well true, and no one has quite figured out how to deal with the large amount of radioactive waste that would start pouring out of people's cars.

Moreover, by hording gas like they are, people are encouraging price gouging. In other words, gas stations (with their huge underground tanks holding thousands of gallons of gasoline) are charging a whole lot more money on gas than they paid for because they're feeding off of people's fears. It's simple supply and demand. People are demanding a lot more gas, and supply has slowed (not stopped), so prices are going out the roof. Instead, if people just went like normal, prices wouldn't spike so much. Idiocy might send our country into recession.

I've always enjoyed Economics myself, though not enough to pursue a degree

No way will this cause a recession.

Recession is defined as three consecutive quarters of declining real GDP.

But you made a good point about gas stations feeding on fears, and I meant to mention it in my post but completely forgot

What amazes me, consistently, and I'm not sure why, is how selfish Americans are. Hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana and Mississippi are dead or homeless, and then you've got people freaking the fuck out over paying more for gas. Perspective, people.

Also, HOLY FUCKING SHIT PEOPLE GAS IS NOT A RENEWABLE RESOURCE. You'd think things like this would encourage people to conserve, check out different energy sources, look for ways to reduce our dependency on oil...but no.

Is fretting about the people down there going to help them? Do what you can and move on. There's no use worrying about them all the time. Instead, we must then switch to our own needs. It's the basic way of things.

We've got many years until the oil supplies run out. Moreover, many, many car companies are already working on that. How about the new Ford Escape that gets 28 miles to the gallon in the city? Have you ever heard of an SUV doing that? In addition, Georgia Tech is currently working on a Ford Explorer, and last I heard it got 58 miles to the gallon city driving. The only problem is it's extremely expensive. Believe me, it's being worked on.

The Ford Escape gets 28 mpg because its tiny. Its one of the smallest SUVs. And 28 mpg is about what my mom's '98 Honda gets anyway.

It really needs to get up to 30+, like the VWs.

My point is that, for SUVs, the Escape has the best fuel efficiency.
