two years ago i was accepted into two art schools in nyc and was having a serious dilemma about whether or not i was ready/wanted to really live there. i felt like the city was going to swallow me up and at 20years old i wasn't ready for that. i was also reading a lot of derrick jensen at the time and was finding exceptionally difficult to find solid reasons to want to live there (the whole nyc story is looong... ) or in any big city for that matter. anyhow, i ended up staying in LA because neither of the schools in NYC were giving me any financial aid and my family couldn't afford the schools, but LA has become so much like NYC in the last 5years i feel i ended up in the same city anyway ( ... )

I envy your already-present fall! Here in Orlando, we won't get below 80 until November. It's such a beautiful time.

As far as New York City, there was a video posted a few weeks ago on treehugger.com concerning Summer Streets 2008: "New York City's Summer Streets, three consecutive Saturdays, August 9th, 16th, and 23rd, when almost 7 miles of streets will be closed to cars (like the original Ciclovia in Bogota) in NYC." (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/08/summer-streets-2008-new-york-city.php) Somewhat relevant and at least a beginning for NYC.

What was your experience like at Oberlin, if you don't mind me asking? I may potentially be applying for next fall.

Good to hear things are getting better.
