yeah, greenpeace's very first direct action was to sail their ship, the rainbow warrior, into the heart of a nuclear testing zone in an atoll in the 1970s. they did this a few times throughout the 70s, and a few activists were murdered by french military guards. they run a lot of ships now and their primary campaign is against the japanese whaling program. japanese activists are already being imprisoned for it.
to be honest i have not thought about it very critically and have thought about it more amusedly. my regular escape fantasies include jumping on board a ship and being a sailor for years; getting salty and sunny. doing that with GP would be pretty cool, and as i was looking for job opportunities on the internet today i did happen across openings for GP's sailing crews disembarking from the Netherlands. they want extremely experienced sailors, though, and i'm very marginally trained in sailing.
but, like you're implying, there's definitely enough work to be done here and i certainly acknowledge that.
Hello handsome sir, I know the sting of unemployment well. Also my mom died at the end of last month, so I can feel myself teetering on the precipice of significant depression, but I am doing my best to continue believing in the beauty and the magic of the everyday. While I have been looking for work, I have also been volunteering a lot. I have found that giving of myself to others has helped me to feel better. Also, reading mountains of books.
Here's hoping that things continue to go in your favor. (Ooh bakery/cafe/infoshop/musicvenue/community space.)
Q: Just curious, why do you spell life like "lyfe?" Does have anything to do with gender studies and womyn?
hullo! as long as we keep fighting, that's the important part.
to be honest i am not entirely sure why i spell it differently; i guess to some extent it makes the word my own, and as i do believe in the power of words and language turning it into something different gives it a different personal significance to me. it's the same way that this time, last year, i used to write about the power of LA DANZ, which was dancing; dancing can be a very superficial thing but the scene i was working to create in virginia had a great significance for me. writing it as LA DANZ captured the zeitgeist of that moment in my life. similarly, writing about LYFE as i experience it in nyc means it has a particular significance that i couldn't personally convey if i wrote it as "life".

I like your list... I've also decided I need to get back to ferociously reading something other than blogs.
