HEY DUDES HEY

Tell me about some awesome feminists that aren't as well known in the American mainstream! Define "feminist" as you best see fit. All genders welcome, naturally. Women who were just plain awesome in general are also welcome.

Icon clearly relevant.

He is SO AWESOME and has quite a few stories on threats he gets from husbands/boyfriends who don't like their wives/girlfriends being told to think for themselves and be awesome.

She's actually pretty well-known in the US! I think. I know I read about her a fair amount as a kid, at least?

...I don't know American mainstream...

But I define feminist as someone who believes that feminine traits and those associated with them (e.g. females and/or trans, flamboyant peoples, those who take traditional feminine roles such as househusbands/wives or solo mums/dads) in society tend to be oppressed and looked upon unfavorably by more valued and supported masculine traits, and work towards creating an equal standard for said traits. This can be by opposing the fact a person is barred from doing a 'traditionally' masculine role due to perceived femininity, or that feminine traits and roles are not considered as vital or important as masculine ones in society, or that the physical feminine form is lesser and needs to be controlled by the masculine, etcetera.

FEMININE AND MASCULINE NO LONGER LOOK LIKE WORDS, but that is the gist of my belief. \o/

I don't know if Melissa Harris-Lacewell identifies as a feminist, but definitely awesome. Rachel Maddow, though she's getting closer to the mainstream daily. The FWD/Forward bloggers. LaToya Peterson and The Cruel Secretary over at Racialicious. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female American doctor.

I'll try to think of more. :D
