August, in the middle of, some thoughts appertaining to.

I'm feeling cautiously celebratory. The last time I felt this celebratory was a couple of weeks ago, for no especially good reason, and to commemorate that I took Janie off to the South of France for a few days. There's a lovely town there called Carcassonne which boasts a huge medieval walled city on the top of the hills - as you fly in on the ( Read more... )

Thanks for the kind words about Tiny Deaths - I'm so pleased you enjoyed it!

I very much enjoyed the penultimate season of The X-Files, and thought that Robert Patrick's Doggett brought in a whole new energy to the series that could have fuelled it for years. But for that last year I felt they squandered him too much. There are some good episodes there, but you need to pick through a lot of very dull mythology stories about alien babies and supersoldiers to find them... But, overall, I thought all nine years of the show were remarkably consistent and ambitious, only dropping the ball a bit after 9/11 - I've read that the series writers were no longer comfortable with the tone of the show, and it feels that way.

I'm not sure short story stardom exists. I think I shall just have to bring out the Dalek whenever I want attention...!

Or the cat. Except he'd get all the attention for himself. He doesn't share the limelight.

I really enjoyed the X-Files movie, because it was pretty much a movie-long episode of the best kind: no aliens, no conspiracy, lots of Mulder and Scully angst. You will not be disappointed.

It was fun. And much better than the first movie - it was actually *about* something for starters...

But grisly. I'm very squeamish.

Yeah, I found myself looking anywhere but the screen in several places, too.

What wonderful news Rob! I am pleased you celebrated with an LJ post, as they are always a delight to read. Sorry I haven't been in touch lately, I just handed in my master's research paper (ie undefended thesis), which had eaten me for the past while (I'm nervously waiting to hear from my supervisor).

And congrats on World Fantasy. I was out of the loop and had no idea it's in Calgary this year, which is quite fantastic in my case as I am about to move to Calgary (in a week) to start my PhD (I have not yet been, but by the time the convention roles around I should know the city a bit). Depending on how busy you are, maybe I'll get a chance to see you? I don't know if I'll be attending the convention or not... I'll be in touch via email before then, hopefully!

Oh, that'd be fantastic! Yes, please - I'd love to meet up!

I'm there for about five days, I think. I don't have many commitments there, except for the award banquet itself - and I'll be very eager to get out of the hotel and see something of the city too. So it'd be a joy to have such a friendly guide!

Drop me an email when you can, and we'll sort something out!

Congratulations on everything, Rob! Especially the World Fantasy stuff--Tiny Deaths was really good and it totally deserves nomination. (And 'Damned If You Don't' is a favorite of mine, so obviously the World Fantasy people have good taste.) I can't wait for the next collection :)

I don't know if I'm going to Gallifrey either in February, though I hope I do get to. Mostly because I promised my parents I'd come home and visit them in December and I'm not sure how well two trips in a short time will square with my bank balance. If I do, though, and you're there I hope we can talk to each other there again.

Thank you!

I'm pretty sure I will be at Gally, actually. It's February. You need something warm and fuzzy like a convention in a warm city to look forward to in February! So I'll hope you'll be there, and we can catch up again!
