society judges movie stars, along with a large number of other groups, as having made a considerable contribution to said society. With this comes a higher regard, large monetary renumeration, and the ability to use this money for power. The majority of society feel that Ledger's death is more of a waste than the average junky on the corner... do you feel any differently? Has there ever been a society (outside communes and the like) that is egalitarian?

What about the average teacher, nurse, doctor, academic, cleaner, etc?

Do you believe that society judges those people to have made a lesser contribution (even though the same media circus doesn't occur when one of those people die). Maybe the difference has something more to do with visibility than contribution to society?

Has there ever been a society (outside communes and the like) that is egalitarian?

No, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive towards one that is (more so). (It's a bit surprising to see this kind of argument from you. Apply the same logic to something like scientific research or engineering.)

I'm with Rob on this one.

The average teacher, nurse, doctor, academic, cleaner, etc? What about the far above average people in those professions? There are MANY actors in the world, not many are considered stars. There are celebrities from other professions (mostly in the USA), ususally because they have been recognised (rightly or wrongly) to have/be making a great contribution to society.

It's not JUST the media's fault is what I am trying to get at. To mangle a phrase, society gets the media it deserves.
