lol, in Law and Politics today, i was asked to defend the governments position on unlimited detention without trial.

i did better than the Attorney-General did, and possibly would have won the debate if my lecturer hadn't decided to cross examine me. i don't mind losing a debate to a qualified barrister though.

i'm all for Human Rights... i'm all for national security... its the balance thats important. i don't think we should get rid of the HRA, or drop out of the ECHR, but nor do i believe those prevent us from effective national security measures (as evidenced by the other 44 signatories of the ECHR)

You have to define Human Rights as well; according to the UDHR, no one shall be subject to an attack on their honour; does this mean that if lovers cheat on each other, they can sue each other for breach of human rights?
As for the ECHR... the Pro-Hunting lobby are taking their case to the European Court of Human Rights. While I support hunting, I can't see any way what so ever that it could be considered a human right. All it does it detract from the overall ideal.
And personally, I'd put the safety of innocent civilians before the human rights of detainees, and I'd bet that the government does too... but that the security services are too good at their job to leak any proof.
