So we adopted the sweetest 4 month old german shorthaired pointer mix last month and are scheduled for her first vet checkup tomorrow at the Brighton Animal Hospital that came recommended by a friend. Anybody here have experience with them? Or any glowing recommendations for any other vets in the area that provide great care but also do not charge ( Read more... )

I absolutely ADORE Dr. Terry Allen at Clark Animal Care Center. She was great with my Dane mix (and sent me a personal and very touching note when I had to put him down suddenly at the E-vet) and my current lab/poodle loves her. He has Seasonal Flank Alopecia and we had a hell of a time figuring it out, but she did a ton of research on her own about it and came up with a treatment plan and everything - really goes the extra mile.

And when I lived in Irondequoit, I went to Irondequoit Animal Hospital and saw Dr O'Neill. I only switched to Clark because she didn't diagnose my dog as having allergies when he was biting at his feet (among other things), so take that as you will.

As far as pricing goes, though...I think those are the among the most expensive in the area. Clark moreso than Irondequoit. I'm not sure where Brighton fits in, though, so it may be worth your while to do a little calling around.

Congratulations on your puppy! :)

We take our dog to Storybook Farm in Victor. We chose there because we lived in Victor when we first got her, but we still drive her out there now -- everyone there is wonderful. I don't know how prices compare, but we took her in to be looked at a couple of weeks ago because she got fleas while on a trip and had some awful rashes -- they didn't even charge for the appointment, just the meds. And when we took her in a couple of months ago for a minor paw injury, they actually took the time to call us a few days later to ask how she was doing.

My dog gets somewhat aggressive when she's in unfamiliar surroundings, and I've always been impressed with how well all of the staff work with her.

Ditto Storybrook, my family has been taking their dogs there for years. Not the cheapest, but not too extravagantly priced, either. And they do boarding. I take my animals to Fairport Animal Hospital - among the cheaper vets, and fantastic people. Brighton I've heard nothing but good things about, so I have no doubt you'll be fine there. I think, however, that it is somewhat pricey.

Thanks for all your input.
We took her to Brighton last Friday for her first examination. Dr. V was great and checked her out thoroughly, even clipped her nails and showed us how to do it. I have no benchmarks to compare against but $44 for a 15-20 minute examination and consultation doesn't sound too bad.
