How it gladdens my heart to see this:

Spain legalises gay marriage

And I don't slag people off publicly too often, but the comment from the Spanish Bishops' Conference (allowing gay marriage was like "imposing a virus on society") quite takes my breath away. What, I'm wondering, does using the most vile and hate-ridden language you can think of ( Read more... )

I am so, so pleased. That doesn't even begin to cover it. It's so wonderful. And I loved what Zapatero said: I wish we had a leader who could, you know, pronounce that...

It really is amazing: Spain has gone from being the repressive pariah of Europe in my lifetime -- in a generation, really -- to being one of its leaders in terms of human rights. They passed another law the other day, not quite so trumpeted but so important for so many people, stating that if a man didn't pull his weight in terms of housework, it would be citable grounds for divorce. What a blow to traditional Spanish machismo!

Most people here don't know how to pronounce Zapatero's name, either. I think his own pronunciation is Castilian (which is what I learned) so the 'Z' probably sounds as 'th'; but South American speakers like Ni and Minx would doubtless give it a different pronunciation.

Hope work isn't *too* oppressive!
