I was so sorry to hear that Mo Mowlam has diedAlong with Robin Cook, who died two weeks ago, you got the sense that she was someone who, though she might have to make compromises in power, would never lose sight of the ideals that had driven her there in the first place, nor of what she was actually there for ( Read more... )

Wow, she sounds quite amazing, actually. And so young, too. What a loss.

I thought she was great. I know it's not the done thing to mourn the deaths of politicians, but two good ones have gone in the past fortnight. And still Blair goes on and on. If I were to take anything from that, it would be that God's a shit.

I'm not sure it's the politicians we mourn, so much as the people they were besides that. And Bush goes on; and Blair goes on; and Putin goes on. It's disheartening that people that choose to hide themselves in the guise of politicians and forget their own humanity get that much power, while the ones that don't forget they're people, first and foremost, well, do not. I think your conclusion is sadly right.

The current mortality rate in the "good politicians" category is pretty damn alarming. I was all set to hear about Mo Mowlam a couple of weeks back when the news first broke about her heading for hospital again, but then a couple of days later, it was Robin Cook. Now it's Mo's time to go as well. I think in today's political climate there is absolutely no shame in mourning politicians that were actually of beneficial value to society - or moreover, had the potential to be.
