Guardians of the Galaxy

Went to see Guardians of the Galaxy yesterday - anniversary trip for me and James, who is always trying to get me to watch superhero movies ;) Unexpectedly, this one turned out to be brilliant!

They should give James Gunn an Oscar or something, because that was a masterful bit of directing. Very well put together.

This was my first go at watching a film in 3D! It was fine. (Unnecessary most of the time, but fine. If anything, it occasionally broke the fourth wall by making the edges of the screen really obvious when something was supposed to appear as if it was coming towards you.)

There's a lot of information to take in, especially for someone who not only doesn't know much about GotG but also only really knows Marvel stuff from absorption from James and watcing the Incredible Hulk TV series in the 80s. But other than some hit-you-in-the-face character introductions it was absolutely fine.

I realised it didn't fall into the usual superhero movie trap of moving past plausibility in the second half of the film... because it started off that way. I mean this in a good way! You have to start off accepting it, otherwise it's not the movie for you.

Acting spot on all round. The Guardians themselves are great (and Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Starlord is spot on) and the CGI on Rocket and Groot very well done. Also worthy of mention: Lee Pace (AKA Thranduil from the Hobbit movies) as big bad guy Ronan, Peter Serafinowicz as random but sadly not scouse guard guy, Glenn Close playing essentially the same role she did in Air Force One and Michael Rooker (AKA Merle from the Walking Dead) as a scene-stealing leading ravenger.

But I guess the main reason it worked for *me* is that it's a film with a heart - several scenes that are emotionally powerful enough to make you cry (oh, OK, to me *me* cry), along with the traditional heartstring-tugging philanthropy associated with many films in the action genre.

Watch it!
