As for sewing...its really not hard after you get used to it. Make a few pillows first to get used to it...then move onto skirts (with patterns). Or another fun thing is going to thrift stores and buying an old dress and re-constructing it to make it pretty again (and if you mess up...chances are the dress only cost $2 anyway). It all just takes practice :)
