The New Town on a beautiful day

Aug 31, 2024 18:43

Edinburgh had the rare experience (for this year, at least) of a full day of beautiful sunshine on 31st August, 2024. I'm still not fit and well enough to walk far, but I needed to get some shopping and decided to go to a supermarket I hadn't been to for a few years (as it can't be reached directly by bus from my part of town): Morrison's at ( Read more... )

It does look like a beautiful day.

The statue of King George IV makes me think of the Scottish cause for independence, which I know little about, but I suspect a similar statue of George III would not survive here in the States.

Was it George III who brought about the Boston Tea Party? That bunch of unelected parasites most certainly aren't very popular in Scotland, although you'd never guess that from the fawning, obsequious way the mainstream media reports on them here.

As for Scotland's independence, it's certainly not going away, although the British establishment has been successful in infiltrating and wrecking the SNP, which had several consecutive overwhelming mandates for independence but spent the past ten years doing nothing about it.

Yes, George III was king over the empire and the colonies at the time of the American Revolution. Taxation without representation was a breaking point, or so I was always told in school. I suppose that like America in the 1700s, there are loyalists to the crown in Scotland for reasons of tradition, or something like that.

Yes, you're right: as in Northern Ireland, there's a Loyalist Protestant sectarian faction in Scotland that swears blind allegiance to royalty, the Union Jack and our colonial overlords regardless of the fact that Scotland existed as a nation for over 200 years before England did and over 850 years before the United Kingdom came into being. It's also weird that this sectarian bigotry persists despite the vast majority of people in Scotland being non-religious.

It certainly was. Unfortunately, it only lasted for a single day. We've been back to the usual fog and pishing rain since then.
