Chapter 1 “Driver, take me to my son’s house first,” Winston ordered.
The driver took a turn heading out into the country to go where he was told. He was surprised at the request. But he was not there to question at all.
Reid sat there, his eyes glued to the TV, his phone lying on the oak floor. He was shaking, just staring at the smashed-up car.
Winston unlocked the door. Walking straight in he saw Reid sitting there, white and trembling. Winston picked up the phone and pulled Reid up.
“Reid, you’re coming with me.”
Reid just followed as Winston pulled him into the car.
“Take us to the hospital,” Winston instructed.
On television, the news crews filmed as the mangled car was lifted on to the tow truck. The police swarmed the site. The film crews got glimpses of the wreckage in the tunnel, debris strewn across the road.
It was being covered by all news crews; all of America would know that Noah Mayer was in the hospital.
When they arrived, the hospital atmosphere was manic. Winston didn’t know where to start to look. Out of the blue, Winston saw Reid move like lighting. He followed him as quick as he could make it through the crowds.
“We’re here to see Noah Mayer. Can you get us information on him ASAP?” Reid spoke.
“Let me show you to a private room. I'll find out anything I can. As soon as the doctor is free, he will see you. I’ll let them know that you’re here.” The nurse showed them quickly to the room.
Winston finally caught up Reid only to go rushing on after him.
“How did you do that?” Winston asked, finally sitting down.
“Easy when you know how. Coffee?” Reid replied.
“Yes thanks. Are you going to tell me?”
“I can tell you the coffee is shit,” Reid answered, disappearing again.
Winston knew there was more to the story than met the eye. He shook his head. He’d never taken the time to get to know Reid. He was always busy with the new campaign; if got this, he could be in the running for the presidency.
Winston looked when Reid hurried back into the room, shutting the door.
“You ok?” Winston asked.
“So many people, so many questions, so many flashing lights,” Reid gasped.
“Ok, what was said? Did you say anything?”
“No, I just tried to get back here as quick as possible,” Reid told him.
“Ok, just try to not say anything. They're like vultures. They will twist it as much as they can,” Winston advised.
****************
Several hours later
“Mr. Mayer...” The doctor spoke, going silent when seeing the other man. “Reid… how are you?”
“Good thanks,” Reid mumbled.
“Can I speak to you in private regarding your son, Mr Mayer?” Dr. Tompson spoke.
“Whatever you have to say, you can say it in front of me and my son's partner,” Winston informed him.
“Ok,” Dr Thompson agreed.
Winston sat there with parted breath.
“If your son makes it through the night, it will be a miracle. He'll be in surgery for another three hours. He has multiple fractures, his pelvis has broken in three places, his left leg has fractures all over, and his right ankle is broken. His left shoulder is dislocated and the left clavicle had been snapped. He has multiple internal bleedings we are still trying to stop. He has major swelling around the brain-” The doctor was interrupted.
“So, you're saying that he is in a coma. I take it you have put a shunt in yet that is not reducing the swelling. You are trying to hid the fact that you believe he will have major brain damage. The injuries you have stated give him a fifteen percent chance of survival. He’s been in surgery what - twelve hours? - and he still has another three hours to go. This is not going to be all of his surgery. You will be unable to operate after this until the swelling has gone down and that's if he pulls through. Yet knowing you, you won’t put blood thinners in with a cocktail of other drugs that will help because you don’t believe in it. Such fucking bullshit. I know my Noah and he will pull though this, so don’t give us fucking bullshit that we should expect the worst,” Reid’s tirade finally concluded.
Winston watched the very angry, red-faced, and heaving body that stood there.
“Speak to me like that again, and I will have your arrogant ass banned from this hospital. You were the one who decided to through the medical towel in,” Dr Tompson reminded.
Winston didn’t know what to think anymore.
“If you ever try that again with Mr. Oliver, I will personally see you are fired and that you’ll never work again,” Winston threatened.
With that, the doctor left.
“I want you to start from the beginning, Reid,” Winston insisted.
Reid sat there looking very uncertain as to what would happen.
“I want you to go back to my house and get some sleep. Go into work. I’ll ring you with any change, and then I’ll have a car bring you back here to see Noah. I want you to look through his charts; anything you need to him to have, he will get,” Winston promised.
“Only if I get to see him before I go,” Reid said, daring Winston to argue.
****************
Winston watched through the glass window at the sight in front of him. He knew the press release was being done, but he didn’t care.
Reid sat there looking at what he could see of Noah’s battered body, the rest covered in casts.
“Look. If you survived being hit in the face twice by an elephant trunk, you can pull through this. I mean seriously -- you’re going to flake out we? We haven't had sex in a month. You’re really gonna give that up?” Reid tried to chuckle at the end.
“Reid, come on. You need some sleep. You have class in three hours,” Winston spoke quietly.
“I’ll stay at our place tonight. All my stuff's there for work,” Reid decided.
“Well, you're moving into my place tomorrow. Also, you are not driving,” Winston commanded.
“Yes,” Reid relented, rolling his eyes.
“Do that again and you’ll get a slap to the head,” Winston warned, giving Reid a stern look.
