Sorry, bad writing, wrote in 15 minutes, but wanted to resurface. Hello new faces!
NORMAL
And Pearl returns. My apologies.
“Whoa, look! How cute- oh my sweet mother of Jesus-“
“Hurry up, someone get a camera!”
“I’ve got a cellphone-“
“No, I want to submit it to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! They’re not gonna take a crappy cell pic-“
“Wait, what are you submitting?” Lily shouted. “What’s going on?”
The other grunts all turned around. “Look, 4-B Scout!” Look what just came from the labs! Isn’t it so cute?”
Lily peered over their heads with an inflated sense of superiority. She had been serving for more than one year now, and those little freckly midgets were only newbies. Didn’t know nothing at all. “Oh, what?” she said casually. “Let me guess… You guys are watching a flight lift-off clip for the first time! Well, I remember my first time seeing one, I was- what the fuck is that thing?”
“Just came from the labs! Look!”
Lily shuddered. It was a puppy- a very cute puppy that would not be out of place next to Bible quotes on a 99-cent calendar, if only it had the right number of limbs. She had seen worse before and had every intention of letting the new recruits know it.
“We-ll, stuff like this happens,” she said pompously as if she saw 9-legged dogs all the time. “The labs just put them out… You get used to it,” Lily sniffed, not revealing that she was in fact not used to it herself. “Don’t worry.”
“Awwww, do you think they’ll let me have it if they’re not using it-“
Crunch.
Everyone froze and slowly looked up.
“What’ya kids doing here?” the Head Executive growled, glaring down with her remaining eye. She loomed over the new recruits like a black-suited tsunami over a small desert island.
Lily did not even blame the recruits as one of them lost control of his bowels and let out a frightened cloud of gas. She was not used to the Executive. Even Anabel was not used to the Executive. She half-suspected the Boss himself was not entirely accustomed to her. No one ever got used to the Executive in the same way no one ever got used to open-heart surgery while fully conscious.
The Executive slowly lifted her left foot off of the remains of the puppy. A spare tuft of white fur snagged onto her shoe, which she shook off. One of the buttons lined up on her massive chest popped open, revealing a crescent of bare skin.
“That was-“ one of the Grunts began shrilly, but the Executive crushed her cigar tip with her bare fingers and interrupted.
“Nothing I care about,” she replied loftily. “Nothing you should care about either. Get back to work.”
“Did you just kill it like that?” the same girl piped up, her eyes welling up with angry tears. “It was just a baby! You can’t just-“
The girl fell silent as the Executive lifted up her foot threateningly. She blinked her eye balefully and just as suddenly as she had appeared, walked away.
They would get used to the strange animals, the long hours, the ever-present feeling of eyes. But Lily did not think that anyone was ever used to the Executive.
