(EDIT: I accidentally tagged this as the wrong prompt. It's 55, not 16, and I can't seem to get it out.)
Me and Nekusagi have teamed up for a collaborative run at the prompt list using an alternate version of Team Rocket I'm developing for a future fanfic project. It's set sometime after the Giovanni event in HGSS.
"Vileplume, use Flash!"
Rock Tunnel, the abandoned cavern in eastern Kanto. As the purple-and-red flower Pokémon's Flash move lit up its inky darkness, the girl tousled her long brown hair and looked down at her uniform.
Yes, the black uniform sporting the familiar red "R" insignia. What was the worth of even wearing it anymore? Team Rocket, once a mighty syndicate with power all over the continent, was reduced to a ragtag group of highwaymen, wanted by the police and living in a cave. A cave.
"Forgive me if this is insubordination, sir, but isn't living in a cave ... below us?"
Her leader, a well-built man in a black trench coat, turned, somewhat angrily, to her. "This is the best we can do, Usagi. We couldn't even ensure the loyalty of most of our members after I had to fake my death."
"Don't go questioning your place here, Nekou," the redheaded woman clad in white who owned the Vileplume sharply warned. "We can just as easily put you back out on the street where you came from."
"Homeless, yeah," Nekou thought. "But this isn't much better..."
"Hey, hey hey hey hey hey. Ariana, no need to threaten her!" This was coming from another man wearing the black Rocket uniform, sporting pointed green hair and conspicuous eye shadow. "Old Proton here will keep her in line!"
Proton advanced towards Nekou. Interpreting this as a threat, the Sneasel hiding behind Nekou's legs bared its claws, prompting Proton to laugh.
"I'm not gonna hurt you, girl! I might be the scariest, cruelest guy in Team Rocket, but I know how to treat the ladies!"
"Proton, enough," the boss thundered. "You've all carried here as much as you could. Make yourselves at home, because as long as the heat is on us, this is where we live."
Nekou considered her boss's words and looked around the cave again.
Home.
It wasn't what she was used to... but this place could be home after all.
