Wiki link! Personality:
Above all else, Azula is a cruel, slightly sociopathic young woman. Since an early age she has been raised to be “perfect” by her father and she has imitated him to a large degree, becoming cold and intimidating, choosing to rule through fear and manipulation rather than through mutual respect or even (heavens forbid) love. As a result of this, she is a perfectionist - she does not accept anything less than the best from herself and others, although others woefully let her down rather often. She does not believe in accepting help from anyone - that would imply that she is weak or that they are better than her and she knows that she is the best.
Other people are seen as tools at best or obstacles to be removed at worst. What matters is that they obey her or fall into her plans. She is a manipulative young woman and has great confidence in her own abilities to steer and influence people through whatever means she has - whether that is blackmail, lies, intimidation or simply application of the right truths. As long as she is feared and obeyed she will be pleased.
She is also royalty and this has left a very strong impression on her. She fully believes in the divine right of kings and in her own eventual ascension to the throne, as well as being a strong nationalist. She was born to rule and has been the perfect child for her father, reveling in the glory that she brings to the Fire Nation - and to herself. Her father’s approval also means the world to her - he may be the one person she actually cares about in the world.
Azula is sadistic and uncaring towards others. As mentioned, she sees most people simply as tools. Although she can show sympathy for others, she truly cares nothing for other’s feelings and will gladly trample over them to achieve her goals. She has a penchant for cruelty and tends to assert her authority in rather arrogant ways, sometimes designed to insult others. This also feeds into her competitive streak - she doesn’t like to be beaten and will retaliate viciously against those who do beat her.
Azula is typically the picture of poise and self-confidence - she expects nothing less from herself, after all. She has a quick wit and is very intelligent, possessing an extensive knowledge of tactics, history and other relevant fields. She is able to think quickly and able to adapt to almost any situation in or out of combat.
Despite all of her poise, she does have failings. Due in part to her sequestered upbringing she is rather awkward in normal social situations where she is not being the Princess of the Fire Nation. Interacting with boys on an equal level, for example, is difficult for her because she doesn’t know what to say or how to talk to them without intimidating them. She has also admitted to Ty Lee that she is jealous of the attention her friend receives.
Beneath her rather monstrous and cruel exterior, buried deep, she has other insecurities. She fears losing the approval of her father and ultimately fears losing control of those around her. The effective banishment of her mother, despite her protestations otherwise, affected her more than she cares to admit. The idea that her own mother thought she was a monster disturbs her on a level she does not admit to herself, let alone others. Given enough time or the right stimuli, she may very well begin to crack.
Her relationship with her brother is complicated to say the least. She teases and torments him constantly, calling him ”Zuzu”, a nickname she knows he hates. She has no compunction with killing or harming him either, especially if she is able to justify him as a traitor in her own mind. Needless to say they do not often get along, although she has found him easy to manipulate in the past, especially regarding his issues with honor and his own relation with their father and mother.
Strengths:
-Azula is a master Firebender, one of the best in the entire series. Throughout the series she shows great skill in her bending and Zuko is only able to nominally match her in the last season. Iroh is probably better than her, as is Ozai. Her Firebending is also unique in that produces intense blue flames rather than the normal orange-yellow. She is also able to lightning-bend, which takes incredible skill. She uses lightningbending to severely injure (and almost kill) the Avatar during “The Crossroads of Destiny” and later on uses it again on her brother. She is also able to use her Firebending to propel herself along the g round or through the air, much like a rocket, as exhibited in “The Boiling Rock” when she uses it to reach a tram hanging over a boiling lake.
-Firebending aside, she is extremely agile and quick on her feet, able to dodge and perform dazzling feats of acrobatics, as well as being adept in hand-to-hand combat (although she is nowhere near the level of Ty Lee). During “The Day of Black Sun” she successfully manages to dodge and otherwise avoid Sokka, Aang and Toph’s attacks for quite some time, despite being without her bending. She also disarmed Suki, a skilled hand-to-hand fighter, with seemingly little effort.
-Azula is a master of tactics, strategy manipulation, being extremely intelligent and able to think quickly and adapt to changes. She successfully implements and carries out a plan to take the great city of Ba Sing Se from within, manipulating the city’s own secret police to do much of the work for her. She is also able to pray on Zuko’s insecurities to convince him to assist her in taking down the Avatar.
-Azula is an extremely skilled liar, usually being in excellent control of her emotions and her own body. Toph, who is essentially a living lie detector, is unable to tell if she’s lying or telling the truth.
-Azula iss something of a sociopath. This may also be considered a weakness as well as a strength. While this allows her to inflict suffering and pain on others, as well as being able to casually discard people she no longer finds useful or kill them in combat, she it also stunts her social interaction.
Weaknesses:
-Physically, despite being a competent fighter and master bender, having her arms or legs immobilized, broken or otherwise disable will leave her unable to bend for the most part (although she can breathe fire) A total solar eclipse will cut off her bending entirely, as Firebenders seem to draw at least some of their power from the sun. This does not seem to extend to being in caves or in the dark.
-Despite being poised and confident, she has little or no experience in normal social situations. When forced onto a level playing field with someone who has no knowledge of her status (especially boys), she is not quite sure how to talk to them without resorting to her usual intimidation and manipulation, such as in “The Beach”. She has also admitted she is jealous of the attention Ty Lee receives, which may indicate that she partially wishes for a “normal” social life.
-The betrayal of two the two people she considered her closest confidants was enough to start her down a spiral into a nervous breakdown. Azula relies heavily on being in control of both herself and others. If and when she starts to lose this control, she may begin to break down - however, it would likely take a truly traumatic situation or sudden shift, such as when both Mai and Ty Lee betrayed her. This eventually leads her down the road to massive paranoia and nervous breakdown.
-On a similar note, despite her protestations to the contrary, the fact that her mother left affected her more deeply than she cares to admit. In addition, she seems truly hurt that her mother called her a monster at one point - once again, despite her protests. She’s more vulnerable to her mother than she likes to think she is.
-She is obsessed with perfection, both in herself and others, and will drive herself mercilessly. She expects others to be able to keep up, regardless, and has no issues with leaving those who can’t keep up behind.
-She has a strong competitive streak and although it can prove helpful at times by giving her strong motivation, it also means that even in such simple situations as a volleyball game, she will not pull her punches (see “The Beach”). She will also try to batter down those who outdo her -whether socially or physically (such as when she was a child and shoved Ty Lee for out-tumbling her).

First Person
Now, I’m not sure where I've been taken or how I got these ridiculous wings, but I am not amused. Now, I know you might not realize who I am, so I'm inclined to be merciful. Once. Then again, I've never accepted ignorance as a suitable excuse....
So, I’m going to give you one chance. Tell me where I am at once and direct me back to the nearest Fire Nation outpost or face the consequences.
As to who I am? Princess Azula of the Fire Nation. And if you're still going to plead ignorance after this, I can only assume you've been living in cave for the last few years. Haven't you people ever heard of royalty?
Third Person:
Azula hated this place. It wasn’t just a dislike for the people or what little culture there was with people from all sorts of different worlds or even the dreariness of it all. It wasn’t like the Earth Kingdom, which she could tolerate. At least there they knew how to treat royalty and how to show respect to those who ought to be in power. Here it was nothing but chaos and disorder. No Fire Nation, no set of laws or rules, no troops.
She could handle it, of course. She didn’t need her father or her soldiers or even Mai or Ty Lee when it came down to it. She didn’t need anyone. As long as she had her own mind, her wits and her Firebending she would persevere and she would win in the end. That was simply how things worked. She won, the Fire Nation triumphed and all would be right in the world. The very idea that she could fail was an alien concept to her. She always won, no matter what the odds stacked against her.
Hadn’t she conquered Ba Sing Se? Hadn’t she nearly killed the Avatar with her own two hands? Hadn’t she been the one to bring back her exiled and shamed brother to a hero’s welcome? Of course, he’d thrown it all away, naturally. Zuko was stupid like that. He had everything he’d ever wanted and he’d tossed away for some silly sense of honor that wasn’t really honor at all. How typical.
No matter what happened here in this strange place where her Firebending was weaker and she had wings, she would find a way out and a way to get back to the Fire Nation. She didn’t care how long it took or who she had to hurt, trick or manipulate to get there. She would find a way in the end. Until then, she could at least pretend to others that this place mattered. She could wear another face. It wasn’t important.
She was perfect, after all.
