my whisk. and a good spatula. and my pyrex measuring cup. and a good knife set.
if you're talking appliances, I'd have to say that I would absolutely love a good stand mixer but haven't been able to justify spending the $300+ on it and now that the boys can't have a bazillion foods, I probably wouldn't be able to make anything with it anyway so it's just as well I guess. A good blender is a must. Mmmm, smoothies. Um, and the dishwasher.
I have these knives and they've been great for us. We've had them for about six years now and I haven't really had any problems. I just have the basic 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup.
Good knives. I was lucky enough to be one of those silly college kids that sold Cutco, so they're awesome. I get pissed off when I go to people's houses that don't have good knives (most people).
Other than that, I use these things pretty regularly: cutting board - plastic with a bit of give. Something too hard like glass will dull your knives, and wood can hold bacteria. Liquid and dry measuring cups, my ring of metal measuring spoons, corkscrew (I have one in my purse and my suitcase as well as the kitchen), a foil cutter for wine bottles, can opener, kitchen shears. An awesome investment as well is oil bottles, something like this. I bought some of those adaptor thingies and put them on wine bottles, and I use one for olive oil, one for vegetable oil, and one for garlic oil. They're pretty darn handy

I bought the cheap ones at Wal-mart and they're great. Cast lodge or something? They just say Lodge on the back. They're pretty common. I have a 10" griddle size for eggs, pancakes, quesadillas, etc and a deep large one for stir-frying and such.
Just DON'T wash them... or at least not with soap. Usually a good scraping is fine. And always either dry them well or heat them up again to evaporate the water.
I find three is useful -- a 1 cup, a 2 cup, and a 4 cup. I use the one cup for measuring liquid ingredients for recipes, the 2 cup for measuring water then rinsing and soaking my rice, and the 4 cup is awesome for making pancake or waffle batter and pouring it straight in the pan.
I have the 1 cup and the 2 cup. Also love my silicone rubber spatulas. good for just about anythign baking as well as just getting the pb out of a jar or whatever. I dont think you need a real fancy mixer for a starter kitchen. where are you moving? im looking for a place to move to.
Without a doubt: my cheese grater - I will never buy Kraft "parmesan product ever again. Sometimes i make meals based on whether it can have parm grated on the top of it
