Summary: Key goes home, and has to decide between doing what he thinks is right, and doing what his overlords require.

The first thing Key did upon escaping the barrier was to make his way to Those Guys to report in. He'd been gone for months now, and they were less than pleased with his absence.

He was confined to quarters for a month afterwards. At one point, this might have destroyed him. His wandering ways were very dear to him, and he had always needed that escape to function. Those Guys hoped to break him; they always did know when he was holding back information.

But Key had something to protect, this time. For what was possibly the first time in his life, he'd made connections that didn't involve suffering by either party. He would give out the information if he had to, if the future of ACROSS demanded it, but he knew, he knew that Those Guys would storm the camp. They had the resources, they had the power, and they had the influence to shut the camp down, to free everyone, and to harness the Director's power for their own. And who wouldn't want that power, that ability to cross the universe's boundaries into the next? It would bring everything under their power, for who could honestly resist a power that could bring in armies and futuristic technology into a battle at a moment's notice?

If it were just that, Key would gladly tell them all. But there was no guarentee, no assurance that the campers would remain within his world. Key couldn't allow...certain people to be returned. That was all there was to it.

So, for the first time since joining ACROSS, Key hid vital information.

After all, as long as he could be sure that the few people he cared for were alive and well, and possibly even happy, Key was willing to sacrifice a small amount of the trust Those Guys placed in him.

The darkness I sit in surrounds me, binding me like the very clothes I wear, keeping me still and silent until such a time as my masters deem necessary to release me, for I am shamed, a pariah in my own world, for I shall not reveal what information I have hidden, even as the world does not share the secrets of its beginnings, for there must at all times be a mysteriousness in the world, a secret that none should know. Thus, I shall sit, and think on my memories, until my very soul rots into the mists of time, and all is forgotten but that the world existed, and that ACROSS was ruler of all.
