Do I Or Don't I???

I applied for a job at Canada Post. It's sorting Christmas mail for about 6 weeks. I've done this before and it's a pretty easy job. However, it also includes pushing around carts full of mailbags and lifting bags as heavy as 50 lbs. onto conveyor belts, and such. It also means that I'll be on my feet all day long, which I am NOT used to. My ( Read more... )

If you have already done this job before then why the 3 step interview process? Would your employment not be on record?
If you've done the job before then you know what you are up against and only you can make that decision. As for power rate increases I would think a doubling of rates is illegal. The utility review board would not let it happen...a smaller increment perhaps but I don't think you've got 50% to worry about.
Good luck what ever you decide to do.

I was employed 30 years ago with them. My records probably have cobwebs on the cobwebs. haha Regardless of that, you'd have to be retested if it's been a year or more.

As for the power rates - in this city, they can charge whatever they want.....and they do, sadly!!! We've been given written notice that the bills will double as of this month, for most of the winter.
Part of the human gouging that's rampant here right now! :(

This probably isn't my business, but I seem to recall you saying something about an impending lawsuit in Florida re your injury. Would working at a heavy lifting job have any effect on the outcome of that? Something to think about, anyway.

I'm inclined to go with ang_o's observation. The defense will argue that as you are an intelligent woman (which you are) that you must have felt well enough to lift 50# mail bags. If you should re-injure yourself, then the defense will claim that you were cured and you injured yourself on the job.

Trust me, my damaged arm/shoulder will NOT let me lift a 50 lb. bag of anything. That's laughable! I am just now up to 3 lb. weights with that arm, and that's a desperate struggle.

My plan is to lift it with my left arm. It's like a huge Santa sack, so I can hold it against my body and lift it onto the conveyor belt. I've been practicing lifting heavy items with that arm, and I think....hope I can do it. I'm going to try anyway!

Can't let my life depend on that lawsuit, as it may get me nothing but heartache in the end. If nothing else, they will have to compensate me for my pain and suffering up to this point.....and that's questionable due to Florida's new laws.

Ang, I've told you before that I value your opinion. Whether I agree with what you're saying or not, I still like to hear it. :)

Yes, that lawsuit is still outstanding. As you can see by my comment to dylex, I do have a plan in mind. Whether it's successful or not, will just be down to luck and determination. I'd love to be able to sit back and hope to win the lawsuit, but life goes on. I may never win that battle anyway. It's not fair, as it was nothing I did wrong.....but life sucks sometimes! I'm going to talk to them at the Post Office and see if I can just concentrate on the sorting, rather than the lifting. Perhaps I'll get lucky!!!

I wouldn't do it. I know the money is good, but your health is more important.

Do you have children? All I think about now is being healthy enough for my future grandchildren - which is many years away! You'll want to be able to lift and carry your grandchildren!

You probably won't find another job that pays that much, but could you find something for $10-$12/hour?

I deliver for Meals on Wheels (the easiest and most rewarding job I've ever had) and make $100.00/week. It's a big help.

Just an idea.....

BTW, thanks for the add. I'm trying to figure out how to add you now. I forget how I added the other people.
