In Which I'm Not The Only One Who Feels This Is The Best Book Ever: A Year of the Tesseract post

*Ahem*

So, as we got closer to the end of Betsy Bird's countdown, I kind of hoped that maybe, with everyone thinking about the 50th anniversary lately, MAYBE we could pull an upset and overthrow Charlotte's Web for the top spot. So Charlotte's Web turns out to be untouchable. Oh well. Still, holding steady at #2 is good... is GREAT... is proving ( Read more... )

I would rather see Wrinkle in the top spot, too. I know Charlotte's Web is a brilliant book, but I've honestly never liked it. And it's not that I found it depressing! Just boring.

Of course, what I'd REALLY like to see would be The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in the top spot, but that will probably never happen. But still. I can dream.

I fully expected Narnia to move up, not down, with the rule to "Vote for the first book in the series if your vote is for the series" (unless people got confused and therefore voted for The Magician's Nephew). I was afraid Harry Potter would unseat Wrinkle for that reason, too, actually. Not that I don't love Harry Potter and voted for it myself. BUT FARTHER DOWN MY VOTE LIST.

I liked Charlotte's Web just fine, but it never went beyond "like." But I've never really liked animal books, anyway, so "like" is a fine compliment for it.

Ooh... I think that's a tough one. I know that I personally love Wrinkle more than Charlotte - but I also think it's easier (not that it's a bad easy), and therefore has a broader appeal. But maybe I'm also happy being in the minority of people knowing the Truth, even if it's a slight minority.

True. When you balance out more-likely-to-appeal-to-the-mainstream vs. less-so, Wrinkle technically might actually be the WINNER!

Last time she actually marked how many points each book got-- I wonder how close they were?

You are incorrigible, and I love you for it! I wonder, too. I still feel like Charlotte's Web has a deeper cultural hold than Wrinkle... but I wonder if that's really so. And what might make people prefer farm animals to... well... all the wonderfulness that goes into Wrinkle.
