"Ryan...shot...me."
So that wasn't a bad way to start the season, was it? Most of the loose ends were tied up in regards to Trey, who had a fairly classy exit to Bloc Party. We have yet to find out about Caleb's will, Jimmy's intentions, Ryan/Marissa's future at Harbor, Kirsten's situation at rehab, etc, but they can only put so much in one episode.
The dreamlike flashback/dream scene was very un-OC. For a minute there, I thought Ryan was going to wake up and be like, "It was all a dream?" a la the Patrick Duffy storyline on Dallas--which I'm sure is before your time because it certainly is before mine. But Josh didn't disappoint and cop out, and Ryan was put back in the jumpsuit. It looks good on him. Ben McKenzie looks a little leaner than the end of last season, when his body looked fantastic. Adam Brody looks a little lean also, but still Sethish with the Penguin shirt and all. Not a lot of Seth in this episode. Which was probably better. I love how they tried to take the boat to escape. When will you kids ever learn? And the weird, going to an island to have fun montage scene was odd. Did they take all of those supplies with them? And where was this island? There aren't that many off the OC coast. Catalina perhaps? Except they didn't dock at a harbor. And that Ryan mocking Summer, "Cohen, Cohen," thing had to be an ad-lib. That was a good touch. And the whole, "You have a thing for seamen" thing was pretty funny, in an overly sophomoric fashion. However, Summer didn't have enough time to shine in this episode.
Sandy is still a badass, and he's very adamant on saving what's left of his family, even if his own wife doesn't want to come home. Speaking of Kirsten, she's got a crazy ass stalker. Jeri Ryan, looking really fucked up, is a scary bitch on the OC. Take it from me, a person very experienced in the art of stalkery, Charlotte either A) wants Kirsten for herself in the "if I can't have you, no one can!" way, in which case, Kirsten will one day come home and find Captain Oats boiling in a pot on the stove or B) Charlotte is going to kill Kirsten and try to become her. If it were me, I would choose B, since Sandy is so hot! Who wouldn't want that?
Julie, Julie, Julie. What is there to say? She's back in her conniving ways, which I admire, but still, trying to set Ryan up for the fall? Come on, JuJu, you're better than this. I coveted the dress she wore to snuff/pay off Trey--it was hot. That would have been hilarious, had Julie just killed Trey. It would have been unconsciously expected from half of the viewing audience. But no, she convinces him to change his story, and blame his own brother--which he does, for a measly $20,000. Dude, raw deal: you sell out your brother, and you get a sum of money that can't even buy a Hyundai.
Marissa was not having the blame it on Ryan deal, and she again was like, "Stay out of my life, Julie!" but this time without the yelp/throw lawn furniture in the pool. She confronts Trey and has him write down who really shot him. And they live happily ever after? I mean, how are there no consequences to this? Yeah, it was self defense, but couldn't Ryan had claimed that too? And why the hell did Ryan even touch the weapon in question--if he's such an experienced criminal as we are led to believe, shouldn't he know not to touch the freaking gun? What an idiot.
The whole Julie/Jimmy quandary is very suspicious. Jimmy obviously has something up his sleeve. When's Kaitlin coming back? If she's slutty enough to wear Marissa's shrunken clothing, I think she's ripe for stirring up some trouble in Newport.
After Trey confessed to what really happened, Ryan goes to the hospital to find him. Only to find that he's not there. And seriously, if I'm ever seriously injured, I would not want to go to that hospital. First of all, they let crazy Julie Cooper in to anyone's room. Secondly, they let their patients escape whenever. Trey probably has a nosocomial infection, so that's probably not a good idea for him to escape. But nevertheless, he leaves town, headed for Vegas. I will see you there Trey, I will see you there.
Next week: Ryan and Marissa had a meeting with the Dean. What the hell happened to Principal Kim? Why do you put us down Josh? (although there were two minority characters with speaking roles in this episode) Kirsten and Charlotte grow closer, but is Kirsten ready to come home yet? Jimmy does some suspicious things. So does Julie. I mean, what else would you expect, it's the OC.
