I may have said this last year, but let me reiterate it: you are literally the only person I have ever met outside my sister-in-law's family (the Snyders, from Chambersburg, PA) who has heard of Fasnacht Day. Nevertheless, she remains convinced that Fasnacht Day is commonly known and widely celebrated, and that my brother and I, and everyone my brother and I have ever asked about it, are the weird ones for not having heard about it before she married into the family.
I can attest that in PA - it's a big deal. But people really love their baked goods there. Mmmm, shoofly pie, sticky buns, funnel cake, molasses cookies, and so on.
"good doughnuts"lvx140February 24 2004, 16:59:17 UTC
Your post warms my heart (probably since I seem to be in a perpetual state of homesickness) - the only thing funny about it is that the doughnuts are considered "good." The way my family makes them, they are some of the plainest things I've ever tasted. We always put maple syrup on them to give them flavor.
Here in Michigan, we have the Polish version- paczki. In fact, I just ate a lemon paczek. I usually have one with prune filling, because I consider myself a paczki traditionalist. Our cafeteria actually ordered a bunch to sell. It's awesome. I eat a filled pastry and instead of feeling guilty, I feel like a good little Polish Catholic girl.
