Reccer's notes: This was written for the deancastiel Secret Angels IV exchange in 2010. I love the idea of Castiel as an assassin in this AU. It calls back to his ruthlessness in so many of the episodes, and his willingness to get the job done even if he has to do something, ah, unsavoury. Here, he's competent, committed, and clever, taking the opportunity to get to know Dean in order to get closer to his target. I was initially a little unsure, given the summary, but I was pleased to see that Castiel has more reasons than just an interest in Dean for why he has an issue with this particular assignment.
“Hey,” a voice says beside him, and Castiel just barely manages to keep from making a noise of disgust. Friendly people. “I don’t think I’ve seen you here before.” Castiel turns to look at the speaker. He’s a little younger and a little taller than Castiel himself, with bright green eyes, close cropped hair, and a camera bag slung over his shoulder. Castiel has never met him, or even seen him in person before now, but he recognizes the man from Michael’s files. Dean Winchester. This works out better than Castiel could have planned.
“Hello,” he says, accepting Dean’s hand when the man offers it to shake. “This is my first day on the job,” Castiel explains. It’s not entirely dishonest; his last job had ended just two days before, and this was the start of his next assignment.
“Awesome,” Dean says, letting Castiel’s hand go and grinning at him. “I’m Dean Winchester.”
Castiel feigns innocence. “Winchester? No relation to Sam Winchester, is there?”
