Title: Fracture Mechanics Writer: road_rhythm Alternate links: LJ Status of work: Complete Characters and/or pairings: Castiel/Sam Winchester Rating: Teen Warnings, kinks & contents:[Click to read]violence Length: 3403 Summary: So it's three a.m. and he's staring up at the ceiling, listening to Sam knife-fighting Cas outside apparently just for fun.
Reccer's notes: I read this fic about four times before I recced it (or, forgive me, commented) because it's one of the meatiest fics in terms of generating thoughts and emotions about Sam, Dean and Cas that I've read in a long time. The disjointed nature of it's non-linear structure meant that each part stands alone as well as part of a whole, in a way that allows for sharp insights and the careful juxtaposition of different canon events. Particularly, the way Sam interacts with Cas and with religion in general is razor sharp, and very carefully put together with three contrasting and separate POVs turned on it. More than just the interesting take on Sam in particular though, there's a mood generated by this fic, a hazy, slightly underwater feel to it, that works more than anything to make it memorable.
[Short excerpt]Listening to him spar with Castiel is a little bit like the day he found out Sam prayed. He wonders if Sam still does. If so, Dean thinks he might have to punch him. He punches the pillow, instead, and counts off the seconds in the dark.
