I think you are spot-on when you said that this is the first episode where the audience is actually allowed to feel sorry for him. Sure, we had a flashback episode ("Six Months Ago") where we see Sylar as a harmless watchmaker who just wants to be "special", but this is the first time we see him interact with someone he LOVES. And that's huge for his character
