I finished it. As uncreative as the coverart is I'm still kind of fond of it.

It was made to fit in the universe of a fic I’m writing, but it fits pretty well with “Ultimates” Steve and Gail as well [hence the title and cover art choices]. It chronicles the main parts of their relationship, from first meeting all the way until Steve is “killed” and a little bit beyond. It’s also more from Gail’s POV, about her struggle with loving a man who put his country first.
1. Glenn Miller-Moonlight Serenade
[The obligatory “They first met while they were out dancing” song.]
Instrumental
2. My Fair Lady soundtrack-I could have danced all night
[Gail has the time of her life and finds it hard to think about anything else.]
Bed, bed, I couldn’t go to bed
My head’s too light to try to sit it down
sleep, sleep, I couldn’t sleep tonight
not for all the jewels in the crown
I could have danced all night
and still have begged for more
I could have spread my wings
and done a thousand things I’d never done before
I’ll never know what made it so exciting
why all at once my heart took flight
I only know when he began to dance with me
I could have danced, danced, danced all night
3. Stagecoach soundtrack-Opening & closing titles
[For a whole week Steve scrimps and saves and does odd jobs for people in the neighborhood to scrounge up enough money to take Gail out for a proper date. For their first date he takes her to see Stagecoach.]
Instrumental
4. Jim Sturgess-All my lovin’
[Steve joins the Army, which as one can imagine, does not particularly make Gail happy. But he promises to write home as often as possible]
Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you
Tomorrow I’ll miss you
remember I’ll always be true
and then while I’m away I’ll write home every day
and I’ll send all my lovin’ to you
5. Vera Lynn-We’ll meet again
[Gail receives her first letter from Steve. In it he promises that he’ll see her again no matter what.]
We’ll meet again
don’t know where
don’t know when
but I know we’ll meet again some sunny day
6. Judy Garland-When Johnny comes marching home
[It’s still early in Steve’s deployment and the loneliness hasn’t set in yet. Right now all she’s feeling is pride and excitement for the day when he comes home.]
When Johnny comes marching home again
Hooray, hooray
We’ll give him a hearty welcome then
Hooray, hooray
All the men will cheer
and the boys will shout
the ladies they will all turn out
and we’ll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home
7. SHeDAISY-Come home soon
[The days draw on and Gail realizes that he’s gone for the long haul, and then the loneliness and the longing set in.]
I don’t know what you’re doing
and I don’t know where you are
but I look up at that great big sky
and I hope you’re wishing on that same bright star
I wonder
I pray
I sleep alone
I cry alone
and it’s so hard living here on my own
so please, come home soon
I still imagine your touch
it’s beautiful missing something that much
but sometimes love needs a fighting chance
so I’ll wait my turn until it’s our turn to dance
8. The Andrews sisters-Don’t sit under the apple tree (with anyone else but me)
[Steve knows that him being gone is hard on Gail, but he also knows that he loves her more than he’s ever really loved anything before-so he asks her to wait for him.]
I wrote my mother, I wrote my father,
And now I'm writing you too.
I'm sure of mother, I'm sure of father,
And now I want to be sure of you.
Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me,
Anyone else but me, anyone else but me,
no, no, no
Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me
Till I come marching home.
9. Garth Brooks-When you come back to me again
[The only thing that’s getting Gail by at this point are Steve’s letters, and his promise that he’d make it home.]
On a prayer,
in a song,
I hear your voice,
and it keeps me hanging on.
Oh, raining down, against the wind.
I’m reaching out,
‘Till we reach the circle’s end.
When you come back to me again
10. Kevin McHale-Dream a little dream
[Steve thinks of Gail a lot while he’s away, and he hopes that maybe she’s thinking of him too.]
While I’m alone and blue as can be
dream a little dream of me
Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
sweet dreams and leave all worries behind you
but in your dreams whatever they be
dream a little dream of me
11. Transformers Revenge of the Fallen soundtrack-Infinite White
[Steve goes on the mission that will ultimately be his last. The rocket explodes in mid-air and the whole world thinks Captain America is dead. In what he thinks are his last moments as he plummets towards the Earth, Steve Rogers thinks of the woman he loves and how sorry he is that he lied to her.]
Instrumental
12. Tim McGraw-If you’re reading this
[Every soldier has one, a letter to their loved ones in the event of their death. The hope is that they’ll never have to send them and it’ll be something they can look back on and laugh about later at how sentimental they were, unfortunately for Steve his has to be sent.]
If you’re reading this
with my Momma sitting there
looks like I only got a one-way ticket over here
I sure wish I could give you one more kiss
and war was just a game we played when we were kids
I’m laying down my gun
I’m hanging up my boots
I’m up here with God and we’re both watching over you
So lay me down
in that open field out on the edge of town
and know my soul
is where my Momma always prayed that it would go
and if you’re reading this
I’m already home
If you're reading this
there's going to come a day
when you'll move on
and find someone else
and that's ok
just remember this
I'm in a better place
where soldiers live in peace
and angels sing amazing grace
13. Merlin soundtrack-Farewell to Gwen
[Gail gets the news that Steve has been killed, his letter arrives in the mail a few days later. This was what she had been afraid of from the day he left.]
Instrumental
14. Carrie Underwood-Just a dream
[Gail is like a zombie in the following weeks, not until the funeral does it finally sink in that she’ll never see him again.]
The preacher man said let us bow our heads and pray
lord please lift his soul and heal this hurt
then the congregation all stood up and sang the saddest song that she ever heard
then they handed her a folded up flag and
she held on to all she had left of him oh and what could’ve been
and then guns rang one last shot and it felt like a bullet in her heart
Baby, why'd you leave me, why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm, looking from a distance, standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now,
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream
15. Faith Hill-There you’ll be
[It takes her a while to be able to think of Steve without breaking down. But one morning she wakes up and finds not that the pain is gone, but that it has lessened-she can remember the good times.]
In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
Ii my heart there'll always be a place for you for all my life
I'll keep a part of you with me
and everywhere I am there you'll be
'Cause I always saw in you my light my strength
and I want to thank you now for all the ways
you were right there for me, you were right there for me always
16. Rascal Flatts-While you loved me
[Looking back on her romance with Steve, Gail realizes that a part of her died with him but given a chance to go back and change things she wouldn’t do anything differently.]
If I ever write the story of my life
Don't be surprised if you're where it begins
I'd have to dedicate every line on every page
To the memories we made while you loved me
I was born the day you kissed me
And I died inside the night you left me
But I lived, oh how I lived
I lived while you loved me
Even though I know the end well I'd do it all again
'Cause I got a lifetime in while you loved me
