[Klavier's spent the last few days locked into his own bad end cycle with his brother. The majority of times, he was able to escape the room without getting poisoned again. A handful of times, he wasn't fast enough to escape death at the blunt end of a glass bottle. But for the most part he got out, until that one time two days ago where he simply ( Read more... )

[he's not sure if he should interrupt, but...he's curious now] Hey, Klavier? What's the idea behind the Jurist System?

[Blinks and looks up.]

The Jurist System? It's a group of six people from the community who help decide the verdict of the case. It's relatively new... that case I was telling you about was the first trial run of it.

[Basically, it's a jury. Because no, they don't HAVE juries in his universe.]

Ohhhh! That's...not something your world's done before, then? [this is definitely surprising, as Klavier always struck him as being rather contemporary Earth...ish]

They used to, but it hasn't been done in a long time. There are old courtroom movies with juries, but nothing like it had happened in my time.

[smiles] I didn't realise prosecutors and lawyers were working hand in hand with magicians these days.

[hmm, Jurist System is an interesting way to put it, and he can easily infer what it is, but...] Herr Gavin, what sort of trial system did you have before switching to a trial by jury?

And is that man named Polly? His parents want a parrot and got a child instead?

Hmm? The verdict was the Judge's responsibility, and his alone.

Nein, his name is Apollo. 'Polly' is just what she calls him, I believe. [Not to mention what Klavier called him.]

That sort, eh? [frowns at that] No one man should be allowed to decide such a thing. Makes the system weak--especially if the judge is corrupt or incredibly ignorant.

Apollo, Polly...suppose I can see that.

Well, that's why we're changing it. The court system is a bit too closed off from the workings of everyday life. It needs to evolve.

It's a bit better than "her lovely assistant", anyway.
