[Background] Shige was born as Sato Shigeki to a rich merchant, Fujimura, and his mistress, Sato; he was then raised by his mother in Kyoto. He was meant to be the heir to his father's name, due to the main family having no male heir, but didn't want to-- his father never accepted him as one of the family. Around age 12 or so, due to his family situation and not feeling accepted by anyone in his family, he ran away from home, and traveled all around Japan on his own for a year before settling down and going to school in Tokyo. (He lives at a temple, lord only knows why.) There he met Mizuno Tatsuya and joined the soccer club, but quit after a while. After that he kind of went around joining a bunch of different clubs and failing at all of them. Then, in their second year, Kazamatsuri Shou transferred in and made the soccer club interesting again-- so Shige went and joined again, and quickly became one of the team's star players.

Insert a lot of soccer matches in which Shige does some pretty crazy stuff. Because of his friendly attitude, he bonded quickly with the rest of the team, especially Shou and Mizuno. There are about 8-9 volumes of soccer matches and such that aren't important to Shige's development, so I'm going to skip over those and just say that stuff happened. The important part starts in their match against Hiba, a school that Shige's childhood friend Inoue Naoki plays for. This is the match where Shige shows his ruthless side beneath the friendly, casual exterior: after he gets injured during the match, he refuses to admit it to anyone and goes so far as to try and cheat in order to win. (He gets caught.) For the first time, Shige clashes a bit with Shou, who thinks that cheating means admitting they're not good enough.

Soon after that match, several of their players are invited to the Tokyo Select team-- as it implies, the invitational team for the best players in Tokyo. Shige is invited as well as Shou, Mizuno, and their goalkeeper, Fuwa-- but their coach, Matsushita, turns down Shige's invitation. It's around this time that Shige starts to get frustrated, although he won't admit it to himself, and contemplates quitting. Matsushita then approaches Shige and says that the reason he turned it down was that he thinks Shige isn't serious enough-- he has the talent but not the motivation and caring that he needs. Matsushita then tells him that if he's not careful he may lose what's really important to him. That's when Naoki shows up and makes a bet with him: if Shige wins the bet, he can do whatever he wants, but Naoki will quit soccer as well. If Naoki wins, Shige has to aim for pro-- as he says, with that much talent, Shige ought to aim a bit higher. Naoki then proceeds to cheat to win.

This sparks a motivation in Shige that he's never had before-- when he's determined, he's determined, and now he's decided he's going to head for the top. Keeping all of this a secret from the rest of his team, Shige goes back to Kyoto and speaks with his father about the inheritance situation-- and thus becomes a real part of the family, changing his name to Fujimura. (I'm still not sure what this has to do with soccer, and the scene where he actually speaks with his father hasn't been translated yet, but it implies Shige's determination.) He then goes and joins the Select team for the Kansai region, and trains like crazy in order to get better-- a big part of this is because he wants to play against Shou, who made it on the Tokyo Select team. He makes it in as one of their star players. Currently he's at the National Toresen, which is a training camp that gathers all of the Select teams from the different regions and pits them against each other.

[Personality] Shige is... overall rather complex and contradictory. On the outside, he seems to be just a casual, friendly, fun-loving sort of guy (not atypical of the Osaka stereotype-- except he's from Kyoto, not Osaka, but they're both Kansai, so my point still stands). He has everyone call him by a nickname. He teases people (especially the overly serious or nervous ones that are easy to tease). He calls other people by his own made up nicknames, whether they want them or not (Shou is "pochi," or "puppy," for resembling an eager puppy; the serious and uptight angst-muffin Mizuno is "Tatsu-bon"; Naoki is "monkey"). He's generally just friendly and casual towards everyone, as long as he likes them.

Underneath that, though, he's not the idiot he makes himself out to be sometimes. He's more observant than a lot of the other characters, and underneath his cheerful nature is a sort of casual cynicism and dangerousness. The other part of him that we see a lot is that he looks and acts like a bit of a delinquent. First of all, he ran away from home, around which time he bleached his hair blond and started growing it long. He skips class sometimes, and also often sleeps through class or gets distracted by doing things such as shooting rubber bands at other sleeping people. He's been shown talking back to people of authority on multiple occasions. He's also quite a good fighter in hand-to-hand combat, and likes getting into fights just for the sake of fighting. Shige is also quite cynical, and his view on the world is that you can't win just by playing fair and square. He's been shown cheating during a match before, and he implies that he would cheat on exams as well.

On the field he's extremely flashy-- he's good, and he knows it, and he shows off every chance he can get. He loves being the center of attention during the game. For this reason, the position of forward suits his personality quite well-- since the forwards are the ones whose job it is to score goals, they naturally get the most attention. He generally wears bright bandanas during games, not only to keep his hair out of his eyes but to complete his flashy look; combine that with his tendency to show off, and he'll sometimes get comments about how he "thinks he's a rock star" and such. During the game he's also quite unpredictable-- a word that sums up not only his game but a lot of his personality as well. Although he's got a lot of talent, people are often wary of him because of this. Combined with everything else, he's got this tendency to pull insane, difficult moves out of his ass that no one else has ever seen before, and also a tendency to abandon his position and do what he feels is necessary to help out. His flashy appearance and such is, in part, due to his tendency to be distant towards everything, which I'll get into next; when he grows more as a character, some of this stuff changes, which I'll also get into later.

A big part of Shige's personality is also one that he tries to hide from other people, and it explains a great deal about him. Simply put, he tries to stay as distant as possible from everything, as a defense mechanism so he doesn't show weakness or get hurt. Naoki comments that he's always running away from the important things, and it's true. Although he has a lot of friends, and a few he would consider close friends, he never really opens up to any of them. He's friendly and likes the spotlight, but in situations such as in the club room before games or in big group get-togethers, he's usually the one who's off to the side doing his own thing or just ditching out. So, while he is genuinely friendly and outgoing, this would imply that he's actually quite the introvert-- a "lone wolf," as Mizuno calls him. He avoids making really close attachments with anyone or anything (including soccer, which is the one thing he should be most attached to), because he doesn't want any more hurt or disappointment. This is probably due at least in part to his upbringing, as he's shown to have been like this since he was young. He's highly independent-- he survived hitchhiking around the country for a year by himself when he was twelve, seriously. Shige also hates showing paint to anyone, because admitting he's in pain is admitting weakness and vulnerability. He's the type of person who could be dying and you wouldn't even know it.

This is where the character development bit comes in. After Matsushita and Naoki both yell at him and tell him to get his priorities straight, he becomes a little more open. He stops lying to himself and decides to take a chance and embrace his talent and, yes, passion for soccer, and goes for pro. It's unclear whether he's grown less detached towards everything else in general, and his basic personality stays the same. At the point where he gets serious about the sport, though, it's clear that he's serious. Gone is the nickname; to his teammates, he's just Fujimura. Gone are the bright bandanas, replaced by a thin black headband that serves the same purpose. On the field, though, he's still just as flashy in his moves, and just as much of a show-off as ever-- perhaps even more, in fact. So while he grows in that aspect, he's still the exact same person he was before.

[Specialties/Abilities] As if you couldn't already tell from above, a very good soccer player-- probably one of the most talented of his age, really, and he could easily go pro if he tried for it. Best suited to the position of forward, but he's capable of playing other positions as well. He's also quite a capable fighter, in terms of teenage delinquent street fighting. And here, I am going to quote from my last app, because I still think this bit applies quite well: "He also has this uncanny ability to make people around him relax-- unless you're too uptight, in which case he has an uncanny ability to be irritating."

[Affection] Hugging/nicknaming/etc. is all fine, especially if he already knows you. Do feel free to give him romantic attention, I'm sure it won't bother him.

[Fighting] Do feel free. He's a pretty good fighter himself.

[Other Facts] None especially important other than random things that prove his weirdness.
