i think i am definitely going to try telling the next telemarketer "hold on please. my cat wants to talkto you." then i'll walk away & hang the phone up later when i hear it beeping. ;)
i've just been telling those pesky telemarketers "no thanks" as soon as they begin talking. & then hang up before they can say another word. usually i don't pick up though if i don't recognize a number on my caller-id.
What's better than the do not call list is anonymous call rejection - most people have it with Caller ID but don't use it. It blocks all private, unknown, and out of area calls - and it's free. That way if a telemarketer does call you, you can see it on your Caller ID and not answer. Only callers that show can get through, otherwise they have to unblock their phone number.
i have had it set up since they first offered that option, so that if someone calls with a blocked number they hafta dial *85 (i believe that's the combination) to unblock their number. i had a couple friends gripe about it at first, but they got over it.
weird thing is when my husband calls from work, he always shows up as "out of area". so i only pick up "out of area" calls if it's a time when i am expecting him to call. if he calls middle of the day, then he has to speak to the machine like everyone else & identify himself first.
*hugs caller id*
i ferget what i heard about that "do not call list" sign up, but i know i heard something about it that made me NOT want to get on it... been too long. old brain is toast! LOL hope it works well for you, sarah.
The national no call list only works for actual telemarker-telemarketers. Those folks who are trying to raise money for charity, cancer research, non-profit organizations can still call.
Phone companies and stuff too! I think that I got calls from the cable companies three or four times a week after we moved and I was on the list.
i HAVE to try that cat one out. especially since i can do a very convincing cat impression. Oddly, the only other impression i'm good at is of Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau. Maybe I should start answering the phone as a cat with a bad French accent.
I'd answer w/ the french accent and pretend I was a "recording of" some 1-900 #. It COULD work, but with my luck the TELEMAN would be bored w/ his life and pathetic job and keep calling my # back a million times for cheap thrills. Aah I think I'll scratch that idea LOL!
