Got into the Mode (good old Essex boys!) thanks to my first girlfriend. We went to see them in London during the SINGLES 86>98 tour in 1998, which was the first band-specific rock concert I ever went to (I'd been to the V Festival before then though).

ULTRA and VIOLATOR are great albums but I've never gotten around to getting SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION. EXCITER was a bit crap. PLAYING THE ANGEL was pretty decent but I didn't like 'Wrong' so never picked up SOUNDS OF THE UNIVERSE. I got the earlier compilation albums (SINGLES 81>85, which is often hilarious, and 86>98 which is awesome). I never got the earlier albums as my girlfriend at the time had them all.

For added awesome, always mix Depeche Mode with Tron:

I really like Playing the Angel, though I've only really started listening to it for the past weeks.
Sounds of the Universe is weaker, but not by much. I really like it. I started off the same as you, thinking "Wrong" was crap, but then I saw it with it's superb Promo Video and sort of "got" it and now I really like it. It's a grower.

Of their early stuff, A Broken Frame isn't great (apart from the instrumental "Nothing to Fear"), something the band acknowledge, and I haven't really listened to "Speak and Spell", but everything else is just fantastic.

Oh, I forgot to mention, you can stream "Sounds of the Universe" for free at we7.com: http://www.we7.com/album/Sounds-Of-The-Universe?albumId=253716&m=0

The only problem is that they put a short ad (mostly for their own service) in front of each track, but I didn't find them too distracting and listened to the album a lot there before I bought it.

All DM's albums are there to listen to.
And plenty of other great bands too.
